LAKE CONISTON YEARLING JOINS THE ALLAN TEAM IN CAPE TOWN

Value purchase at the Equimark Vintage Yearling Sale

16th Mar 2008

Allan Bloodlines topped up its Cape Town racing team at the Equimark Vintage Yearling Sale on Sunday (16th March) when buying a colt described by the auctioneers as one of the outstanding individuals of the sale. The Equimark Sales Race for graduates of this sale had just been won by a daughter of Lake Coniston and this strong chestnut son of the same sire could be the type to try for a repeat. Out of a winning mare by All Fired Up, a grandson of Damascus, Lot 142 was consigned by Graham Koster’s Rosedene Stud for the state of the late Mr P Botha and brought R 180,000.

“I felt that he was a R 250,000 colt whose superficial cut to a hind leg might put some buyers off,” said David Allan. “We have been fortunate to have good success with first foals when the individual and the genetics add up to an attractive package and this fellow more than fits that bill”.

Earlier, Allan had been underbidder on a ready made broodmare in Lot 120, a half sister by Sadler’s Wells horse Doowaley to Champion Older horse TRADEMARK but was trumped at R 340,000 by the sales company acting as agent.

Allan had made two purchases in January at the Equimark Ready to Run Sale - a filly by Casey Tibbs with a potential broodmare pedigree and a colt for a partnership by Fanatic Dane, in Allan’s opinion a real value stallion at the lower end.

“Our older horses have been flying the flag for ourselves and for our Racing Club Straight Bat Racing here in The Cape but the three year olds have been heavily virus affected and will reappear in April/May along with some nice two year olds from last year’s yearling sales,” said Allan. “Local owner Chris Newman has taken a leg in the Lake Coniston colt who will be started at Craig Carey’s Arc en Ciel Stud and join trainer Vaughan Marshall in mid year”.
