Standout fillies cost a lot less than at the Nationals

18th May 2008

The GrandWest Yearling Sale near Cape Town suffered for its move to mid May and will return to full strength next year in its more customary earlier slot. But this time around, there were nuggets to be mined amongst generally moderate stock.

Allan Bloodlines bought two yearlings. The first was for the proverbial "stone nothing" at R 20,000. By Second Empire - and much more racy than many - the filly is out of an Eagle Eyed mare which genetically is the same as a Danehill mare. She is quite closely related to European top sprinter CONTINENT, by LAKE CONISTON, who will be an ideal mate when she goes to stud.

The other, at R 95,000, would surely have fetched R 250,000 at the Nationals. Oozing quality and the scope to make a lovely 3 year old, the bay filly from Klawervlei Stud is by the Danehill horse REQUIEM, who has started very well, out of an unplaced but beautifully bred young mare by SAUMAREZ who has the right credentials to be a good broodmare sire. Named CAPE ESCAPE, this filly joins the Allan team of yearlings to have a few months rest and then be reassessed.
