A lovely well-related colt purchased under budget

17th Apr 2009

Allan Bloodlines purchased for 44,000 guineas a splendid colt by USA sire Arch at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale in Newmarket earlier this week. The firm was acting on behalf of an excellent client in Kazakhstan who races in The Czech Republic and Germany as well as his home country.

The colt is out of a (then) 17 year old rarity, a mare by NIJINSKY, dam of five winners including a Champion 2yo in France, with the brilliant COUP DE FOLIE as 2nd dam thus showing off the relationships with COUP DE GENIE, MACHIAVELLIAN and EXIT TO NOWHERE.

In trade that was at around 2005/6 levels with a strong overtone, a very high percentage of the catalogue was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed working through half a dozen or more agents and trainers in an attempt to avoid being "run" when seen to be bidding. Although there were genuine under-bidders and other buyers active at strong prices, this set the tone for the better lots in the sale. The stresses and strains of Breeze up preparation limit the numbers that have clear vettings, and vendors' ideas of reserve or buy-back prices do not always coincide with Allan's value assessments. Much work went into seeking the right filly for another requirement but a healthy budget, value and price did not equate!

The guide given by the published yearling purchase costs also bore close analysis. Many offerings were USA bred and purchased in dollars making the conversion rates then and now very different. Allan's purchase was around break even on the old exchange rate for the consignor - Tally-Ho Stud - who also made excellent profits on others, turning 40k into 210k in one case.

The Guineas Breeze Up Sale will take place on Friday 1st May with earlier inspections.
