Two mares secured from Book 1

5th Nov 2007

The world record price for a broodmare was set yesterday on the first day of Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale when Sheikh Mohammed's man John Ferguson signed the ticket at $10,500,000 for the Sadler's Wells Gr.1 winner PLAYFUL ACT - barren though she was. Available only because of the disperal of the late Robert Sangster's stock, this mare demonstrates strong support for recent stallion acquisitions at Darley.

In the meantime, mere mortals battled for seven and six figure mares in a strong market, although the emphasis was on young mares with potential - and a good race record themselves.

Acting for a new investment fund with a single principal investor, Allan Bloodlines as Fund Manager whittled a lot of viewing down to a list of nine mares for the first two days. Final "looks" reduced the number further to six serious targets with one or two early "markers" to indicate levels.

The first purchase on Monday afternoon was NO FRILLS ($380,000), a stunning mare by one of the world's best broodmare sires DARSHAAN. She has already produced a recent Stakes Winning Group Placed Singspiel filly and has a big family herself whether going right back to KOTASHAAN or recently to Goodwood Listed winning 2 year old MEERISS. In foal on an early cover to stallion of the moment EL PRADO, this mare has taken up residence at Darby Dan Farm.

Joining her is a grey or roan mare named CAREFREE CHEETAH ($375,000. Dam of a Gr.3 placed 2yo winner and another winner, this TREMPOLINO mare is a full sister to ARKADIAN HERO and is in foal to the massively popular MR GREELEY, believed to be a colt, also on an early cover.
